Sport wagering approved in South Dakota

South Dakota has become the latest state in the USA to accept applications for sports wagering licenses. Applications were made available on The South Dakota Commission on Gaming site on May 20 and will be accepted from July 1 alongside a set of rules that will form the new sports betting bill passed back in March.

The rules

Sports betting will be added to the list of approved gaming types in this state. As per the rules, gambling equipment suppliers are forbidden from gambling on sports betting equipment or manufacturing slot machines. Alongside a series of safety and security rules, they also prohibit an applicant or licensed premise from refusing to produce records when requested by the commission.

Fees

A $5,000 (£3,537) application fee will apply to providers who wish to offer the service of sports wagering. As well as this, facilities offering sports wagering will also be expected to pay a $2,000 (£1,415) license fee and a $2,000 (£1,415) annual renewal fee.

The bill

South Dakota voters first voted to approve a constitutional amendment back in November 2020 in the city of Deadwood. The bill was passed by the South Dakota Senate with a final vote of 32-2 in February and then by the state’s House Representatives in March with a vote of 58-8. It was signed into law by Governor Kristi Noem in March. The bill also outlined that any customers that wish to place mobile bets at a licensed casino in South Dakota must first register in person in order to do so.
