Twitter launches “product drops” reminder features

Twitter has launched its initial test for a “product drop” feature. Users watching or following a brand will be notified of their product drops via a reminder in their app or on the desktop site.
It comes as Twitter explores ways to make more money, and in a backdrop of social media shopping becoming the norm, it makes sense for Twitter to expand its previously lacking marketing features.

What is Twitter saying?

Twitter itself explained in a statement: “People come to Twitter to talk about products and product drops every day. And merchants have long been dropping products on Twitter without any native product support. We’re excited to change that and introduce new shopping features that empower shoppers to stay on top of the launches that matter most to them and provide merchants with another way to engage shoppers around big product moments.”

“When you click on the merchant’s Tweet, you’ll open the Product Details Page – a full-screen space where you can see all the information you need to make informed and confident purchase decisions. This includes the price, pictures, a description of the product, and a clickable hashtag that will show you what other shoppers on Twitter are saying about the product.”

What does this mean for affiliates?

Twitter is trying to move more into the retail market, offering more marketing options for brands. They are a little late to the game but getting the right idea. The iron is hot, with social media users presented with and hunting down what they want to buy online. Social media marketing is becoming more vital to brands than ever, and Twitter hasn’t been as useful as other platforms when it comes to marketing. Broadly, people go to Twitter to create a conversation and share opinions, so any move that could aid marketing will be gratefully accepted.
