The German betting trade association Deutscher Sportwettenverband (or DSWV) made a call to Germany’s gambling authorities to do more about illegal gambling operators in the country, to curb the country’s perceived wider problem of harmful gambling.
Making the call on the German inaugural Gambling Addiction Action Day, organized by the Federal Centre for Health Education, the DSWV made a plea to take action against German casino operators running in the country without approval or licensing. Due to this, they are not bound by the same regulatory measures, such as protection from gambling-related harm. The DSWV posits that there are currently over 400 “black market” websites operating in Germany and that gambling harm will go down with the regulation of these black market casino operators.
DSWV president Mathias Dahms warned, “We were able to identify more than 400 unlicensed websites where customers from Germany can easily register and play. And that might just be the tip of the iceberg.”
